13 years of traditional karate and kempo helps out.
We would do exercise where you hold your leg out in a round house kick position as high as you can for about a minute or so. That's what helps with control. MMA is all about power with very little finesse.
As for me holding my leg out there, it was only for about 3 seconds. I could have held it out there longer but I had more kicking to do.
