I used to work at a Subway back in highschool and yes, the bread is white flour bread with the caramel coloring as Eric has said. There are two reasons for this: first, it's cheaper than 100% whole wheat bread and second, most people don't research what the actual food being touted is.

Still, I love the Subway double meat subs... yum! half the bread, twice the meat! WOOHOO!
