Actually, I read that a generally good rule if you want to add mass is to eat 25 calories per 1 lb. bw. By that, given he's 158, that's 3950 calories. So if you're only eating 2000-2500 calories and you're moving a lot of weight in the gym you might not be giving yourself enough fuel to grow.
