first off, you're doing it right by seeking out info instead of just jumping in blindly.

2nd, the peeps at GNC know jackall about supps... they are there to sell you shit, period.

3rd, as a college student looking to add some supps relatively cheaply. i'd say find yourself a descent price WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE. if thats outta your price range, whey protein concentrate would work.

beyond just a whey supplement, some creatine CEE would be a cheap but worthy addition to the mix.

beyond that, spend your extra money on FOOD! shoot for 3000-3500 calories /day, everyday. getting in those calories on a consistant basis is whats gonna make you grow. focus on protein and healthy fats while keeping simple carbs to a minimum.
