If I were to start bulding a home gym with limited funds I would first be looking for an olymoic weight set. 300lbs to start with. Look in craigslist.com or your local pennysaver and you can get them really cheap.
After the weights I would then be looking for a used rack (with safty pins in place and a adjustable bench you wont need a bench press)
Those 2 items are a great way to start off.
