From what I remember, it was largely an issue of capacity issues. Both players use a blue laser with a shorter wave length. Data is more condensed on a blu ray (or hd dvd) disk than a CD. Blu ray capacity is 25gb single side, 50gb double side. HD DVD came out with with their single layer disc which had a capacity of 15gb. Eventually they came out with a dual layer single sided disk with a capacity of 30gb, but at that point blu ray had already gained more of the market. Blu ray also had a 50gb double sided disk and HD DVD was behind in coming out with their dual layer double sided disk which had a capacity of 60gb. So shit, if you had to choose, HD DVD would be better because of the larger capacity. That's the only different between the two technologies. Yeah, HD DVD started its decline in January...I remember all of the headlines. It's toast. I think the whole reason that blu ray (Sony) survived was because it was a step ahead the whole time. I'm pretty sure all of that is right...that's how I remembered it anyway.

Interesting fact: They actually tried to negotiate some kind of merger or do something to keep from having a run off like this in 2005. But...........it didn't work out, obviously.
