Rippetoe is used to learn the lifts and how to train yourself. Beginners can certainly squat three times a week since the intensity is so low.. Just keep building a strength base and becoming familiar with the lifts he recommends. Eventually, like everything else (and especially this programming) you'll need something else. But coming back lifting again, I'd probably stick to a couple of heavy (relatively speaking) compounds per day.
