If your cardio is high intensity, then it will wear you down as much as lifting. By high intensity, I mean a break neck pace (fartlek sprints, interval training, etc....over a 90% effort, I believe). If you're doing low intensity cardio, then it will have all of the benefits that everyone mentioned.
It's great to be able to control insulin, but the book you're reading seems pretty misleading. I think the author is being extreme...doing something "different" so she can sell copies. It happens a lot. Having a balanced meal doesn't necessarily have anything to do with controlling insulin.
