For me, I'd want to know if you can squat correctly in the first place. All this half or full talk...basic technique (sans powerlifting tweaks) is the same. A bad half squat or a bad "full" squat can be bad for you knees. But I've seen very few who can do a FULL squat in a healthy way right off the bat. So it can be a bit of a moot question.

For general advice when starting out I'd go as deep as you can with a set back, etc...and save other half squats for later down the road.
