This is a pretty nerdy engineering thing, it involves earthquakes so its not too bad lol, but here goes.

During an Earthquake:

Stronger buildings are more likely to collapse than weaker buildings

A building can be located at the epicentre (directly above) of the earthquake and remain standing, but an identical building further away can collapse

Highrise buildings are not significantly affected by earthquakes. They can typically withstand a magnitude 8 without any trouble.
