If you have to commute a thousand miles you'll probably never go. Focus on what you can do, not what you cant..but don't use a smith.
Plenty of things you can do to get hella string that are not back squatting.
I'd like to get like a hundred people who are really precious about the backsquat (my new word I just picked up) and ask them just how many other lifts they've every done? I used to be the same way untill I started branching out and found out there were so many cool ways (and fun) to get strong.
