Don't go on a crash diet, because that is what you will do, crash! Ditching sodas and stuff is a good start, but allow yourself a treat, maybe one a week. Also, start with mild to moderate cardio, walking, epilitical trainer, get your heart rate elevated, and maintain that for 20 minutes or so, don't give yourself a heart attack though. Lifting weights is also very important, find your one rep max and start off at about 65% of that, then gradually increase the weight and reps.
