Its not much extension, its just enough to keep the bar from knocking your chin. You can give it a shot with a wooden dowel or an empty bar to see how much it is for you, but it shouldn't be anywhere near the bulging disc stage.
If anything you need to get under the bar and get it over the scapula with that back flat and shoulder girdle stable.
As gay as this following video may be, its got some good form for military press, towards the end it gets a bit hairy but the beginning you see the emphasis of moving the body under the bar.
