I think in a lot of cases, trainers can hurt your progress. Some try and sell you things that are a waste of money just so they can make a little bit off of you. Or the ones that a gym will assign to you for free if you join their gym...the type that don't really care they are just putting in their 8 hours and are thinking more about going home. Some trainers though, I think can teach and push you to things you wouldn't do if you were working out alone.
