Question I heard another rumor.... any truth in it?

Someone said to me that our bodies stop producing fat when we are very young. He said that once we stop producing fat cells, we'll have the same # of fat cells throughout our life, and when we gain weight, those cells just swell up. We can't create new fat cells.

Exception: He said that women, when they're pregnant, can change the # of fat cells in their body...

Other than that, we're stuck with what we have.

Sure, we can loose weight, and decrease our bf%... but we still maintain the same # of fat cells. Thus, some people are pre-disposed to be fatter than others.

BS?

That doesn't necessarily mean that someone would be predisposed to be more fat that another person. It doesn't even necessarily mean they have the potential to be more fat than another person. If you have liposuction in a particular area, it removes fat cells in that area. That's why unless you're serious about it, you will look fugly if you get fat again.

Its basically true that your fat cell count remains steady after childhood. When you gain weight they swell up, when you lose weight they shrink. As far as the predisposition to obesity part, I don't think any of the studies have shown a direct correlation.

Here is a good article on the topic: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/04/he...-fat.html?_r=1

This is the part that I found really interesting, the fact that fat cells were regenerated even after surgery:
"Obese people who had weight loss surgery had as many fat cells two years after the surgery as before it, even though they were much thinner."

Yeah, fat cells can swell up to biblical proportions. It's just a big bag of stored fatty acids.
