so many people think that...i'm not sure why. since she's in a deficit...i bet the only thing that protein is going to feed is muscles...not fat

Proteins, whether they come from a powder or whole source, are certainly not going to bulk her up.

Proteins are needed to repair the muscle after a training session. When training, you break down muscle tissue. Your body has to repair it. And since muscles are made of proteins, obviously proteins are needed to rebuild that torn tissue (as well as other macronutrients, proteins aren't the only thing used in that process).

However, just by taking in a 'lot' of protein, that's not going to make the muscle rebuild themselves a lot bigger. There are a lot of factors that go into muscle growth. And one of the key things needed for muscle growth is a calorie intake over one's maintenance level, which she doesn't (shouldn't) have.

And even at a 'higher' (over maintenance) calorie level, it's still not all that easy to pack on the muscle mass, especially for us women. Women lack the testosterone needed to make the muscles bigger at a faster rate. So even if she were eating over maintenance, and lifting to build size, it would still be very difficult for her to 'bulk up' right away. On average, most women can only put on 1-2 pounds of muscle a month. And that's if everything with programming and diet is spot on.

Also, since I'm assuming she doesn't just want to be skinny, she wants to look and feel firm, proteins are necessary for that. That whole thing about rebuilding muscle tissue... in a deficit the body can't really build bigger muscle. But it will repair what's been damaged, and over time the muscle will become more dense, giving her a 'more fit' look. Not 'bulky.' And again, proteins are needed for that repair work the body's doing.

I hope that all made sense. And if she's still concerned about it, let her know that I'm pretty much the same height and weight as she is, and I take in about 160-180g of protein a day. And I'm by no means 'bulky.' ;)
