If you were led to believe that you should eat a certain amount of 'fat' per day, you may have misunderstood. The fats you want to eat are not in burgers/junk food, but in foods like nuts, avocados, fish, fish oils, flaxseed, to name a few. That, and what type of exercises were you doing?
