Probably at first. But keep in mind, I weigh right around 230. That said, your requiements are going to be slightly lower. All the info given so far has been spot on. the kid just needs to lay out a diet plan and stick too it.
buy some bags of brown or wild rice, beans get lots of beans, they are good carbs and protein, easy calories.
also buy some almonds as they are easier to snack on on the go, and are easy calories.
veggies- greens, anything, sweet potatoes new potatoes
protein-eggs eggs eggs, fish lean beef and chicken which you already have
