Default Late Night Workouts and Meals

Time to get some opinions here...

I've started working out later and later in the week. Usually I head to the gym around 8pm and get back around 9:30pm. When I get back I chug my normal post workout shake and everything is good, but I could use some insight on what I should be doing for the meal that comes about an hour later.

When I was working out earlier in the day I would have my PWO shake and then follow that up an hour later with a meal consisting of a decent amount of protein and low GI carbs to take advantage of the "window of opportunity." The problem is that now that I workout at night, I would be eating a meal then hitting the sack by 11:30pm. This means if I ate these carbs they would most likely just be sitting in my stomach when I hit the sack.

As of right now I have mainly be eating alot of cottage cheese and thats it. This provides me with the protein for the night but I am wondering if I am missing out on the carbs that I should be consuming in this meal to replenish my glycogen stores.

For those of you who work out late at night, what do you choose to eat for this follow up meal? Do you think I should still be eating low gi carbs along with the protein or do you think something like cottage cheese is good enough even though it lacks the carbs?

I would eat a meal like you normally would and with the meal I would have a casein shake. The proteins you are getting in your meal will be slow digesting and the casein protein will be low digesting, so you should be good to go. Without the carbs you will not be refueling those glycogen stores.

Totally agree. I don't get out of MMA training till 9:30PM sometimes 10:30PM and I just stick to the basics, post workout meal and a solid meal ~1 hr. later. If you want to try something, start sipping your post workout meal about 20 minutes before your done. That way you’re getting your nutrients a little early but not too much, and you can eat your main meal a little sooner.

So you guys aren't too worried about eating the carbs close to bed time then?

My PWO shake already has the immediate carbs/protein I need right when I get home so I know the immediate need is covered, I just want to tweak this last meal because of its timing. I guess I can always start off with a regular sized meal (carb wise) and if I find myself retaining too much from it I can cut the portions down.

I agree with the Casein comment Fina, thats why I have a nightime TP mix

I wouldn't worry about the late night carbs unless you are cutting. If you are all out cutting then I would change the time of the workout. But if you are bulking or just maintaining then I don't see any worries.

I'm cutting right now and I just time the meals a little different. I eat almost 450cals a night starting at 9:00PM and ending at 11:00. I just eat my post workout shake a little earlier and my last meal I take little bits till I go to bed. My dinner gets cold by the end but I don't care because I'm still dropping fat.

Well, I never cut but I work out late a lot. And I do what the others have suggested after of course my PWO shake. I don't worry about it.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.
