Default milk + bloating + ppwo...

during the week at work i drink a half gallon of milk every day....has anyone noticed less bloating with say...skim instead of 2%?? i don't wanna ditch it all together as it helps me get a load of protein in...just don't know what i'd replace it with to get the cals and protein...

also...sometimes my ppwo comes close to bedtime...say within 2.5 hours or sometimes less...i know it's good to have carbs in that meal, but...what would the effects of replacing the carbs with some essential fats be?

Great question. I have the same problem. I recently started drinking whole milk with my protein shake before bed because I believe that fat is supposed to help slow the digestion of protein. I wonder if I wouldn't be better off also to just drink skim milk and take some EFAs.

How many grams of EFAs were you thinking about taking?

I dont really know about the milk, i've never been a milk drinker due to the lactose, but I do drink a lot of protien shakes that are just powder and water. Or an old trick is to mix your shakes using light cream, it is a good source of fat, and it tastes so good. As ross said, fats slow the digestion of protien, and they slow carbs too, so it could be a good thing to add in. I wouldnt over due it with them though, it will be a lot of cals, so make sure to adjust your total macros to make up for it.

Can you give us a break down of what your ppwo shake looks like. I have never done a ppwo shake, I just hit my pwo shake, and then a meal afterward. My meal is usually an hour and a half to two hours before bed, and it usually has a small amount of low gi carbs.

post workout is a shake...20 grams malto...40 grams protein and creatine. and then about an hour later i eat "supper" which is usually chicken breast and rice...i guess i should have specified the ppwo is not a shake...but a meal

i've got some chub on the love handles...and i'm wondering if the load of rice later in the day is the cause...would not mind replacing it with natty peanut butter....or even going half and half...cuz i need to get more efa's in anyways.

right before bed lately i've been having 8 oz. of 1% milk, activia yogurt...and a handful of almonds...

If you are carb sensitive, it would make sense to replace the rice, but honestly, how close to bed you eat carbs has little to no impact on if they are stored or not. I would use low gi rice if your not already (basmati, or brown), and throw in some efa's to boot.

regarding the bloat issue... The level of fat in milk isn't going to make a difference. It's lactose that makes you retain water between the muscle and the skin. And it's a tiny amount. So unless you're at 3% and about to step on stage for a contest, you're not going to be able to notice that little change.

^^unless of course the "bloating" is really GI track distress from the lactose, then you will notice a huge difference. Personally, If i have 8oz of milk, I feel like I'm 500lbs, and everyone one in the room hates me.
