After your workout is best. Some people like it as soon as they wake up as well...You can do both if you wanna.

Dude,
I chug my Whey Protein as soon as I am done working out. Your muscles are screaming for nutrients so lets see......your body has just got done working hard right? Your body is made up of a lot of protein right? Whey is the quickest uptake and fast absorbtion right?
Post workout is optimal.

You can have it after you got up from bed or else even you can have it after your workout. Actually Whey Protein can flood your body with peptides and amino acids in *a very short time to stimulate maximum protein synthesis.

The best time for the whey protein is after the workout.
Take whey protein or any other natural protein after half an hour of your workout.

As soon as you wake up... But eat solids within an hour. Right after a workout. It's a quick digestive protein. Look up casein which is a slower digestive protein that can be found in cottage cheese and I recommend eating a serving or two before bed.

I think carbs are more import then protein... Use protein for recovery and carbs as energy.
