Haha. I've been able to cut down my consumption to two cups in the morning only whereas there was a time when it was pretty much constant consumption. It took a long time to do it but you should be able to do ut too. But I won't say you'll be able to quit completely..

Dave you can't be that bad off if you can afford Starbucks Real addicts go for the cheap street stuff.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.

Truthfully if it's just the caffeine, and I'm sure it is, you'd be better off with coffee. I don't want to sit here and tell you that coffee is healthy but when it comes to a concrete length to specific health problems....the high fructose corn syrup probably wins the race. It's a weird thing to say, I know, but if you like coffee I'd consider drinking that instead. At least that way you can control the amount rather than being stuck with these huge cans you don't want to waste.

I actually read this thing recently about energy drinks being marketed to kids as young as 4! But the article made an absurd point. Saying that doctors were afraid one of the side-effects of early caffeine addiction is that it could develop into stronger performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. It sounds ridiculous on the surface to me. But the main thing is anybody knows who is addicted enough to caffeine that it ceases to be a "performance" enhancer. When you need caffeine just to bring you self up to a normal level you can hardly call that "enhancing".

That sounds quite similar to what they tell kids in gym class with regards to smoking and drugs. First you smoke cigarettes, then you move onto weed then you do heroine. I don't buy that personally. In the end it boils down to the individual but I don't like the idea that they generalize someone's behaviour as progressively heading towards the extreme end of the spectrum. Come on, coffee to roids, or cigarettes to crack cocaine. It may be true in some cases, but not many.

I used to drink a lot of soda then I switched to diet because of the calories. Now I drink 1-2 cups of coffee in the morning and than a crap load of water. The withdrawal from all the soda damn near made me kill someone but I think I am better off without the stuff. Good thing I won't give up beer....

Something I just found:

AURORA, Colo. A popular, but potentially dangerous energy drink was being removed from 7-Eleven stores in Colorado Thursday after several reports of high school students using the beverage and becoming sick. The company which makes Spike Shooter said it has no plans to change the product or stop marketing it.

One can of Spike Shooter has about the same amount of caffeine as three cups of coffee. A high school in Colorado Springs banned the beverage and sent letters home to warn parents.

The Cherry Creek School District said Thursday it will also send warning letters to parents after several students at Smoky Hill High School got sick.

Tim Patterson, chief executive officer of Colorado Springs-based Biotest Laboratories, which produces Spike Shooter, said the drink isn't intended for anyone under 18.

"I think it's a little disingenuous for them to say that they're not marketing to teenagers, that the drink isn't suitable for teenagers, and then set up shop near a high school to hand out free samples," said Tustin Amole, a spokesperson for Cherry Creek Schools.

The makers of Spike Shooter said they do not market to teenagers. They said it was simply chance that the 7-Eleven where the marketing campaign was being held was across the street from Smoky Hill.

One student who said he was given a free can of Spike Shooter last Friday was David Bickel.

"I started shaking uncontrollably, my hands and my face turned blue, and I guess my heart just wasn't working right," Bickel said.

He became ill and went to the emergency room where doctors diagnosed him with a caffeine overdose.

"I don't want these kids consuming the product," Patterson said, "That's not my target market."

He said thousands of consumers have used the product without a problem.

Spike Shooter's did express some concern about people getting sick.

"You don't know how the people took the product or anything else, that makes it very difficult to even comment on it, but rest assured there's thousands of people that absolutely love the drink," said Tom DeNardin, a spokesperson for the company which makes Spike Shooter.

The cans suggest consumers test their tolerance to Spike Shooter by drinking only half a can the first time they use it.

The company, which also produces products it says burn fat or enhance testosterone, warns on its Web site that Spike Shooter should not be consumed by people taking certain other medications or if they have high blood pressure or a number of other conditions. It adds, "Keep out of reach of children."
