^^^ Does that have to do with the fact that the harder something is, the more brittle it is?

I'm in danger of getting into some very compliacted and technical terms which will give me an aneurism, so for my sake I will try and keep it as simple as possible

Not quite, but you're on the right track. Stronger means that its stiffer (stiffness is a measure of how much something bends or defelcts when you apply a force to it). Earthquakes are like women, they are attracted to stiff things . The stiffer it is, the more the attraction. More attraction means more earthquake forces going into the structure which means more damage.

Flexible structures are not very appealing to earthquakes so they won't bother with them too much <insert analogy on women> and the forces are not nearly as high.

During an Earthquake:

Stronger buildings are more likely to collapse than weaker buildings

A building can be located at the epicentre (directly above) of the earthquake and remain standing, but an identical building further away can collapse

Highrise buildings are not significantly affected by earthquakes. They can typically withstand a magnitude 8 without any trouble.

Whats funny is all these Building codes and permits needed to build in Ca. in the name of "safety" (I think it;s just to make money) yet there are plenty of building from the 1900's to 1050's still standing with no problems

Yeah, CA can be especially bad because of the san andreas fault. Alot of permits and whatnot are there to pay for someone to stamp your drawing, but they're also there to help keep contractors in line and cover the governments ass. I feel for you though, permits can be a long and expensive process, sometimes even rediculous lol.

Back in the 1900s there was something called quality lol. Nowadays with so many fly-by-night contractors, construction quality has gone down the shitter. Connections between members (ie. quality of construction) will make or break a building when an earthquake hits. People building back then knew the area and had seen what the earthquakes in the area had done, so they would build accordingly.

Heres a cool one, the typewriter was invented by a Hungarian immagrant called Qwert Yuiop. If you look at your keyboard you will see he left his signature.

In Spain, to say that something is cool, you say that it is "mother fucker". I was pretty incredulous at first and most of the people from Central America/Caribbean whom I've told didn't believe me at first. When I was in Spain, I asked my Spanish mom, who is a very elegant lady and a writer for McGraw-Hill, how to say something is "cool" and she explained it to me, although she seemed a little embarrassed.

Su coche es muy puta madre. - His car is very mother fucker.

The owl is the only bird to drop its upper eyelid to wink. All other birds raise their lower eyelids.
