Default Music subsrciption for Ipods, etc... what's your favorite service

I'm way behind the powercurve when it comes to mp3 players and such, so I need some help.

I want to buy an Ipod or something similar, but don't have a lot of music files to download.

So... I've heard about subscription music services (not satelite, I already have that)... basically, I pay a monthly fee and I get all the free music downloads I want.

Which services do you recommend and which would you avoid?

I just can't stand the music they're playing at my gym anymore. When I'm working out... I'm very specific about the music I like to listen to.
