"They say your brain shuts down in cryo-freeze . . . . all but the primitive side . . . the animal side . . . maybe that's why i'm still awake . . ."

time for an update of sorts, although there isnt much good news i'm afraid.
From sept 11th to oct 2nd i didnt train at all. Work, travel and some rather intense personal problems (if you're thinking they involved a creature with a vagina, you're thinking right!) made it rather difficult to even think about weight training or anything else. the worst part is that my eating and sleeping was for absolute shit.
On Oct 3rd i got back to the gym and was crushed by how much strength i lost! To me, this clearly illustrates how important it is to maintian good nutrition even if one cant train!!!
anyway, I am trying not to let it depress me!

the good news is that i've tried squatting again. I am keeping it real light for now and using sets of 8 reps instead of 5's.
I've ditched most of the "beach" work and will just stick to the basic lifts for now.
I'm also going to focus on improving my bench press and so will train that lift on mon and fri every week, while doing the OH press only on wed.
here's how things will go:

week 1
mon:
squat
bench
chins

wed:
T-bar row
OH press
Deads

Fri:
same as mon

week 2
mon:
T-bar row
bench
Deads

wed:
squat
OH press
Chins

fri:
same as mon

sit-ups and hanging leg raises will be added back in a week or 2.

i figure i'll be back at my previous PR's in about 2 more weeks, which means i end up losing about 6 weeks total which totally sucks ass but it is what it is.
i still think i can reach my previously stated goals by mid-spring so I guess it's all good. I hope my knee holds out so i can keep squatting, I've really missed those buggers!!!!

I'm a little curious about your knee problem. You say you tried squatting again. In the interim what did you do to address the problem besides avoiding squatting? Do you know what the nature of the problem is or just that it acted up during squatting?

If you haven't addressed it and just start up squatting hoping it will magically come together and you won't see the problem again I can almost guarantee you this won't be the case. I am not trying to discourage you I just don't wan't to see you needlessly laid off.

Do you know if it is a mechanical (i.e. hardware) or is it a software problem? There may be some things that will help but just waiting around and then going back to the same things you were dong before almost never works. And if it does seem to work for a while it won't work forever. The only people who believe that healing injuries is pretty much the same as growing muslces or gaining strength (Rip comes to mind) must think that injuries always happen in isolation...and this is not always the case and certainly not the case when it crops up doing slow barbell lifts. Not everyone who squats should someday need knee surgery!

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.

Thanks guys! it's great to be attacking the weights again. i always miss it so much when i cant train!

Eric-
my problem is a calcified bone formation on the top portion of my left kneecap. it sticks up slightly higher than the actual kneecap therefore putting abnormal pressure on the tendons when in the stretched position. the right side is probably the same (though not as severe), but i only had the left one x-rayed.
i am not squatting quite as low as i was before (still below paralell though) and will use a lower intensity range and mostly just play it by ear. I may never be able to squat really heavy but i think i can play around with volume and intensity enough to make the movement useful while avoiding re-injury.
btw, it never bothers me while deadlifting.

Talo- nope, I'm not worried, just a bit bummed about how MUCH i lost in so short a time! I blame almost all of it on my pityful food intake (I lost about 8 lbs!).

"Merceneries, Elementals, Necromongers . . . Shit, I've never been so popular. I should probaly slip these chains and open up a few arteries. But why drive when you can get driven? Free ticket to Crematoria. Thanks Toombs. Got me some business there, named Jack. And once we settle up, I walk away forever. So I'll just wait... all back-of-the-bus for now. "

quick update: training is going well, almost back in PR territory again
squats have been going well. no knee problems and i'm real close to volume PR's with the weight I used tonight.

weekends have been rough as far as getting all my food into me so my weight has been a bit static. Today i told EVERYONE that there is nothing they can say or do that is keeping me from the dinner table from now until xmas so stay the fuck outta my way!

i havent taken any measurements in a while so i cant say where i am as far as that goes.

anyway that's it for now.

Default here we go again . . .

heheh, hey look who's here . . . does anyone even remember me???

damn it's been close to a year since i last posted in this journal and with good reason, my training has been lousy to just plain non-existent fr most of that time!
a quick backstory on my absence:
last winter i was hit with 2 seperate intense bouts of tonsilitis. I couldnt train, I couldnt eat, and I lost a lot of weight in a very short time (damn that fast metabolism!)
then around feb i embarked on a major home renovation project that i worked on almost every single night after work and all through the weekends. this went on for about 3 months. i did attmept to do some training but either i just didnt have the time or i was too bloody tired for it.
after that it was really really hard to get any momentum going. Work, personal shit and a new furniture making hobby all intervened.
i was back into the 150's for b/w and my strength was comparable to that of either one of the Olsen Twins (together they could whip my ass though!)
I was discouraged but also it gave me time to relect on a few things that kept running through my mind all these months and i've come to a few conclusions:

1. i really dont care how heavy i get anymore. i feel much better at a lighter b/w and so if the only way i can gain muscular b/w is to be walking around with 25% or more b/f all year then i dont want it. it isnt healthy and i looked pretty bad too.

2. if i miss a meal or a gym session the world will NOT end! i used to stress out so bad about that shit but i realize there is NO reason for it. i am just making things harder for myself by doing so.

3. when i was at about 170-175lbs not a single solitary person commented on any changes in my physique except saying that i looked fatter. now, i KNOW my gains were not all b/f. my arms had increased quite a bit and so did my thighs and my strength was the best it had ever been. On the other hand almost every single person i've seen in the last 6 months keeps telling me how much better and healthier i look. now this isnt to say i am in the gym solely to get compliments from others or any shit like that, but only to underscore the fact that i myself didnt think i looked or felt that great and apparently it showed!

so the deal for me now is to recapture my previous PR's but at a b/w of about 150lbs and then continue to gain strength while maitaining a healthy level of bodyfat vs definition.
I've been hitting the gym 2-3 times a week for about a month now doing only squats, bench, rows, Chins, OH press, DL and ab work on an A/B type thing just like i did before. I'm still as weak as hell but should be back to my old numbers pretty soon. i guess technically that will make me stronger than i was before right?
i may increase food intake a bit over the winter, but worrying about seeing the scale go up every single week is not going to happen anymore. its just not worth it when in a few weeks of illness i can lose a years worth of hard training and eating.

another thing is i have been seeing a chiropractor for the last 2 months now. not for a specific injury or anything but i had been experiencing some weird and intense stiffness across my middle back and wanted it checked out. long story short, there were no serious structural problems and the weekly adjustments have gone a long way towards making my left and right sides of my body feel equally strong. I always had a weak feeling in my right side, especially when benching but that seems to be rapidly disappearing so i am quite pleased about that! the back stiffness never came back either so it's all good!

that's it for now, i'll let ya'll know when i reach those PR's again!
