Todays Pulls

Was is your journal, Hits, where I said your sumos didn't look like sumos? I think it was. Anyway, your sumos don't really look too much like sumos, lol. Nothing wrong with the lifts, though, mechanically you just look like you're pulling a conventinal with a wide stance.

HIThopper 12-28-2008 06:52 PM

Yeah it was mate.Nowadays when I pull I just pull how I Feel the most comfortable.I got so caught up in Rippetoes gotta get this angle inline with this and Tate saying get your shoulders behind here and drive this first!!! I just said fuck the world this is how I pull deadlifts,if it aint how some want to see me pull I dont care.I just wanna pull PRs!!! LOL :biglaugh:

Out of curiosity E, what is the main difference you see? I cant see for looking!!:biglaugh:

in sumos'....your torso is usually more upright....pretty close to up and down...and you are bent over quite a bit :) but being comfy is all that matters :)

Wes has some good vids that would help you although I'm sure there's some good ones on youtube. Go over to IA's and ask Kabuki or Sandblaster if you haven't already. I'm pretty sure Kabuki pulls sumo.

Yeah I don't pull a lot of sumo but I do pull a cycle once every couple months.

First off the bat, though, Hits, imho, Dave's deadlift articles are not for you. They are good for really big grinders. You need your shoulders in front of the bar, lol, the way 90% of lifters deadlift.

I understand perfectly what you are saying about pulling the way you pull. And probably there is a good reason for why you prefer it. But be careful about technique because sometimes things can feel good for the wrong reason. Given that the only thing I see is the way the bar tracks. You really should have your shoulder forward of the bar and it should line up with the scapula...if you want to pull conventionals that is.

Rippetoe will confuse the hell out of you.

The difference I see with what you are doing and sumos is pretty simply. The angle of pull and the mechanics of a sumo should be more akin to a wide stance squat than a conventional dead.

Shoulers much higher and hips lower. It should really feel like it's centered in the hips and in fact the hardest portion should usually be right off the ground as opposed to just below the knees as in conv. deads.

Watch some vids like DH said. You need to visualize that. It'll be a whole lot easier for you to see it than for me to explain it.

But like I said there is nothing wrong with what you did. There is just not a big advantage to it. I have seen people who pull conventionals with a wider stance.

I'll look too...problem with youtube is most vids are peope showing off. So you look for sumos and you get someone doing whatever they gotta do to get the bar up...and that AIN'T a way to learn technique if you're watching.

Actually women are good for technique videos a lot of the time. You see less ego. I did find one but the problem is she was doing high reps..so that only the first one looked real sumo and then it devolved over each rep into a sumo/conv. hybrid. It's hard to find a vid I don't need to "qualify".

Ah..here is pity pulling sumo:http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/c...t=MOV00159.flv

That's about as sumo-ish as you're gonna get, I reckon.

HIThopper 12-29-2008 03:23 PM

I see what you are saying guys.Might look into it a bit and see how it feels,ATM pulling this way just feel strongest for me.When I pull with a close stance I feel like I cant use my PC as much.

Thanks for the great info. :)
