Ok, so I went contrary to Eric's advice
Actually that is pretty much what I envisioned happening. I would have probably done the same thing

Hopefully your hips won't scream at you. The advantage, though, with sumos in that respect is that the failure point tends to be right off the floor. Good deal. Yeah, def do both styles.

Snatch grips would be tougher on the shoulders.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.

Besides increasing weight with sumo deadlifts, is there anything that I could do to increase hip strength? I suppose wide stance squats would be beneficial. What about stuff like hanging jack crunches? Another issue will obviously be not overtraining them. My hips actually feel tired this morning, but not sore...so that's a good thing. Right now I'm thinking one wide stance squat or one sumo DL a week will be good. I realize they still get plenty of work doing conventional squats & DL. Your thoughts?

The conversation went like this:

Why are you doing sumos?

I want to strengthen my hips.

You're built perfectly for them & you want a big DL, so pull sumo style more often.

Ok. (Pulled my first working set)

Why are you doing speed sumo DL's?

I'm not.

Then increase the weight.

Okay, but I don't want to hurt my hips since I haven't done these in forever.

How do your hips feel right now?

They feel great & they have for more than a month.

Then increase the weight again.

Derek (the powerlifter that I have mentioned before (Ok, so on a side note, he missed his pro card by 5lbs at his last meet. If he hadn't tried to jump 85lbs twice on his 2nd & 3rd DL attempts, then he would have gotten it.)) was very surprised that I couldn't pull 385. Because of the speed that I pulled 355, straight off the floor without a pause, I should have been able to do 385 without much of a problem. So that aggravates me....it's something to work towards.

You start doing sumos again after more then a month and you're worried about not pulling 385? You're silly.

More like a year...just a month since the hip problems. I really, really, really want to break that 400lb mark! Thanks for the encouragement. I am really stoked about it.

I'm with ya on trying real hard to get to the 400lb mark. My conventional dead is at 165kg (~363lbs).

Unilateral hyper extensions - (BW) 1X10, 2X8
Leg curls - 3X5 150
Leg extensions - 1 set

My hips are worn out. I warmed up for squats...I did small sets from 55-285lbs & just cut the warm up short. My hips felt shot. They didn't feel injured, just very tired. They're sore (fatigue + DOMS, I think) in the front & sides very near the surface...so it's the flexors and abductors. Unilateral hyper extensions are fun. I will be sore tomorrow.

I'll answer my own question...

I asked around and got a hodge podge of responses. The guys at my gym seemed to have better answers than my Health & Fitness professor who seems to be a little light on practical knowledge.

Haha the guys at the gym said "Do wide stance box squats. And shut up." Then they recommended some flat footed sled/prowler/predator pushing. That should be plenty to keep me occupied.
