Damn I was hoping they would say you just sprained it!! Heal up mate and come back stronger than ever.

It's a Grade 2 sprain (it feels like a grade 2.5 sprain :D). I'm sure there was some tearing along with the stretching. The closest place to the school infirmary that I could park was over 1/4 mile away. It took me at least 20 minutes to walk there & it was fucking cold. I asked for crutches so I could make it back to my car. I can walk okay so long as it's less than a half marathon unlike this morning. That was a wasted $15... Oh well. I kind of doubt I'll go to any of my classes tomorrow since there is a 1/4 mile walk between every class.

Grade II strain.

^^ Thanks. I looked that up earlier & had trouble discerning between the two. It's surprising how many different sources call it the same thing interchangeably.

Yeah, I just wanted to make sure you were looking for the right thing. I'm assuming it's not the knee but the hamstring as you said.

BTW, you mentioned a hamstring cramp last week at the end of front squats. You might assume that there is a disfunction related there. I know you'll say well, I wasn't lifting, etc, when it happend.

The only other thing I will, say, it once you get the hamstring back in order a bit don't assume that the underlying "problem" is in the hamstring. Consider that the hamstring may be, and probably is, a symptom of another underlying disfunction that may be centered in another muscle.

That makes sense. I actually started supplementing with calcium, magnesium, & drinking gatorade for the past few days because of this cramping (it has happened a few times inside & outside of the gym over the past couple of weeks). And it's always been on my right side, which is my stronger side. I'll talk to my PT about this tomorrow.

Cramps, most of the time are NOT caused by electrolyte imbalance or magnesium or fluid status. That's kind of one of those assumptions people make. Much more often it is in the soft tissue itself which in turn is related to sensorimototor system problems, disfunctions. Adhesions, knots, scar tissue, and a muscle whose "irritibility threshold" is lowered. Again, though, keep in mind that is is MOST likely that the hams is just the brunt of the problem.

BTW, since cramping was a problem before, I would actually not fucus too much on stretching the hams after the initial healing.

If you had said, you'd been doing endurance running out in 100 degree heat and your legs or whatever cramped up I might say, oh, fluid balance, electrolytes, etc. But after some front squats or just in general walking around? Doubt it.

Was the knee injury in the right side as well?

Ross86 11-10-2008 05:43 PM

The knee injury was on the left side. I increased fluid intake & electrolytes just because it was an easy thing to do. I've been waking up most mornings feeling dehydrated. I've been foam rolling my hips, hams, glutes, and upper & lower back just about every day I've been to the gym. I guess I probably started foam rolling a lot because I've been more stiff & tight lately. I must be getting old. I'm not at the overreaching or overtraining stage either although I'm sure that working with the atlas stones Friday, doing a ME squat Saturday, and then trying to play some football on Sunday was overdoing it.

One thing is for sure; I am going to start using my crutches. My left hip is beginning to bother me from all of this limping around. I can barely walk, but I hate crunches. Walking aggravates my right leg just as much with or without the crutches, but I'm going to have to do it to save my hip. I'm going to go back to the doctor which is across the hall from my PT to ask for a handicap parking tag tomorrow morning. Otherwise I'll be walking about a mile & 1/2 tomorrow & Thursday. On crutches.
