Default BCAA Proportions

I know my answer is somewhere on the forum. I've been searching for a while but can't seem to find the post I'm looking for.

What are the proportions of L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Valine. I was under the impression it was 2:1:1 respectively. I'm seeing alot of supps lately with 4g 3g and 1g or 3,2,1...which doesn't give the "proper" proportion (if that exists). I know (vaguely) BCAA's play a role with neurological pathways, triptophan, those kind of things.

So what are the possible effects, if any, of using BCAA's in the various ratios?

Kane, the usual ratio I've seen is 2:1:1, but to be honest I dont think it matters that much. I havent seen any supps with 3:2:1 what ones are you looking at?

It was 3g 2g and 1g, not a ratio of 3:2:1

http://www.onestopstrength.com/zen/i...roducts_id=283

At the bottom of the page it has the BCAA breakdown.

*EDIT* 3g, 2g and 1g IS a ratio fo 3:2:1...its definitely one of those days

The trytophan thing has to do with the leucine. The ratio, as far as I know is not based on any definitive knowledge but simply the ratios of those aminos that the body tends to keep. I think that's 2:1:1 but I don't remember what more it's based on than just and assumption. I'll look through my info.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.

I found a lot of the studies that have to do with the affect of leucine on appetite that were done on rats. I had another that was on people but now I can't find it and don't remember the details.

It's a lot of reading but basically it seems that long term high leucine intake may supress both appetite and growth. However this seems to only be true in the case of low protein diets. The addition of the valine and isoleucine reverses this effect. There is all sorts of antagonism among those aminos which is important (but it was all on rats...).

I'd say, to be on the safe side don't use leucine alone but if one takes in boat loads of protein it's probably no big deal. But I'm with hardgain on the ratio...I don't think it'll make a big difference. Most sups are 2:1:1 like he said.

Edit* I just realized you were talking about a whey supplement. LOL, man don't worry about the bcaa ratio in that. It won't matter. None of this matters except in the context of a bcaa supplement at high levels that you take all the time. You may as well analyze the amino acid profile of a steak.

yeah I didnt realize that either, I wouldnt worry about the BCAA profile in a whey powder, it wont matter.

I thought we were talking in terms of something like Xtend.

I did mean both cases, but the reference I had "off hand" happened to be in whey. With the BCAA's I was taking before (seperate from whey) they had a 4:3:1 ratio (4g 3g and 1g).

With the N-Large 2 it has 5.4g Leucine, 3.28g Iso, and 3.0g Valine

So with 3 of those shakes and prob 5 doses of those BCAAs it would put me to 35g, 24g, and 14g (roughly speaking). The N-Large in this case gave just as much as the additional supps. This combo is close to a 2.5:2:1 ratio.

I'm not doing this right now, but I was more or less curious about how that would work out on a long term scale.

The info you provided pretty much cleared things up for me though. Thanks Guys!
