Default Joint supplement?

I was considering taking a simple Joint supplement and I was wondering if you guys think it would be necessary? I am doing the Rippetoe routine and so far havent experienced any considerable pain, besides some back pain. Should I start taking some joint supps as a preventive measure for when I start doing heavy weight? My knees make cracking/popping noises sometime, but its nothing serious really. Just basically trying to figure out if these supplements are for preventive or for treatment. Thanks guys!
