Default 58 Years Old. How to maximize for bulk?

58 years old. Lifting for 30 years on and off. Obviously my T level isn't what it used to be. Nutrition is OK but could be better. My goal is to put on some mass in my shoulders and reduce or eliminate the catabolic hit. I'd like to burn some fat as well and have increased my cardio (I ride rode bike 15 - 20 miles).

My new trainer recommended DHEA but the stuff messes with my head ( I think). Interrupts sleep. I have sleep aphnea so I don't need anything messing with what precious sleep I get. He also recommended Tribulus in some form.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks! Great Forum

DHEA converts to DHT which contributes to hair loss. LOL, ironic you mention that.

When it comes to supplements and/or drugs, never trust a trainer blindly since YOU'RE the one taking it. Research it:

What about DHEA side effects?

Individuals with normal levels of DHEA who take high doses are likely get side effects. Common side effects caused by high doses of DHEA include acne, increased sweat odor and scalp itching, menstrual irregularities, irritability, and restlessness. Androgenic hormones, such as DHEA, testosterone and androstenedione can cause hair loss in susceptible individuals. DHEA is likely to raise levels of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the hair follicles. Too much DHT will lead to scalp hair loss in some individuals. DHEA has not been tested in combination with other medicines, therefore little is known about drug/hormone interactions.

The old addage here is 80% diet, 20% training.. It's THAT important.

If you don't post your current routine, noone here can say what you're doing right/wrong since noone here possesses the "third eye".

You could reduce it, but never eliminate it. Your body will ALWAYS be against building muscle. Period. It naturally wants to stay at a thin 160 lbs. The only thing you can hope to do is to feed the furnace as often as possible. High protein, high/moderate carbs, moderate HEALTHY fats.

Question: What kind of trainer do you have? Qualifications (experience, not certs!)?

Thumbs up

Thanks 0311. You are absolutely right about the research. I pitched the DHEA.

My trainer has about 7 years experience working with older lifters. I've met some of his clients....they are all doing well. He took the time to do a good interview with me and has a thorough knowledge of my health issues (sleep apthnea). His routines are mostly compound exercises with drop sets. I work shoulders once a week with him.

My routine is:

Monday - Shoulders/Abs
Tuesday - Cardio (running or road bike)
Wednesday - Back/Bis
Thursday - Cardio
Friday - Chest
Saturday or Sunday - Cardio

Note: I'll rest at least one day a week.

I obviously need to clean up my nutrition.

Thanks!
