Default L-Glutamine, Are You A Believer?

So I'm just looking for a little feedback.
Rest and nutrition are just as important if not more-so than your actual workout routine. That being said there are many schools of thought on whether certain supplements, and even supplementation at all, is actually effective for recovery.
As far as I can tell the weightlifting community is split on whether or not supplementing with glutamine is actually worth it.
A little background: L-Glutamine is an amino acid (amino acids are the building blocks of muscle), probably already found in your protein shake. I believe it's supposed to help stop catabolism from occuring when you rest.
Catabolism - when you sleep, you can't feed yourself, but your body still needs to eat. So when it should be rebuilding the muscle fibers you spent hours in the gym ripping and tearing, it wants to consume the building blocks feeding itself instead. You don't want all your hard work to just get eaten do you!?
Me neither. So I decided to try it. I began putting 2.5 grams in my post-workout shake and 5 grams in my per-bed shake. I didn't notice anything spectacular over a span of 4 weeks. I gained about 4 lbs, but I feel like a may have gained that anyways, even without the glutamine.
What I did notice, however, was that I no longer woke up with terrible stomach pains. It used to be that every morning I would have to work up an appetite slowly because I was TOO hungry. I guess my body spent all night gorging itself, on itself.
I've heard many, many people swear by it, and I've also heard numerous people preach that it's a waste of money.
It may just be in my head, but I'm pretty much sold on glutamine.
Lemme hear your input.
