Question Abs question... pulling in your abs during an ab exercise

Someone suggested that pulling/sucking in your abs during each rep of an ab exercise will develop flatter and more symetrical abs.

I've seen people with cut abs, but their abs were twisted and non-symetrical.

Additionally, I've seen people with cut abs that actually push out like a ripped beer belly...

Then, of course, there are those people with perfectly symetrical, flat (almost concaved) abs....

What are your thoughts?

This is a great question! I likey.

I'll give you a whole big thingy later but the short answer is...

1. Sucking in your abs during ab movements can contribute to flattening..through strengthening the TVA which essentially helps "pull in" the abdominal wall. But it will not help with symmetry to my knowledge and since the rectus is ONE BIG MUSCE...if appears uneven it would seem to me it's gonna stay that way.

2. Unless your Australian ..sucking in your abs should ONLY be recommended during "ab movements" and NEVER during squats and such..such as Paul Chek recommends.\

3. Abs that are cut but "stick out" as if you have a cut up beer belly are a side-effect of faulty bb training. There is also a phenomenom called GH gut but lots of people can get this affliction to some extent through faulty training without ever taking any GH. This can be corrected through good core training.

There is an article by Mike Robertson which addresses this very technique and I will link that later.

Also ripped stomachs pushed out like beer bellies can be the result of fat behind in the muscle (which is the dangerous type of fat)... Ill post a link when i fight the source for this information

Your are definitely right about the fat "inside" the body being dangerous as opposed to subcutaneous fat. But I think that is mostly fat surrounding the organs and such. Maybe it can push the gut out a little but I've never really heard of that. Could be, though..it's a new thing that is really just being brought to widespread attention, seems like. I just deleted some info on that though, lol!

This is me and I've never done GH.
Dosen't matter how much weight I lose , my stomach always sticks out. Always has - thought it was genetic as my youngest has the samething.

Yup. And it's not as bad as some of those guys that step on stage. And I can suck it in to create that vacuum look ( not currently ).

What I've found also is that all the static core moves, planks side planks, varitations, all sorts of other core stuff contribute to flattening the belly. Again, in case someone comes in to this late...we are not talking about spot burning, lol.

Anyway, MR goes into this in some depth and to some extent it comes down to proper postural alignment. It's a kind of thing where looking better actually does mean you ARE better, lol.
