Yes that is what he is saying, however, he is also saying that you should be learning the form and technique of all the lifts for a few weeks first.

You should be doing sets of 3 ... maybe 5 sets? maybe more? but you should not fail at any of these sets. You really shouldn't even be tired after completing. Every set should have focum on bar path, the feel of your body, and proper body position. There should be little strain.

Once you have learned these movements and they feel natural to you then you can start on a 3x5, 5x5, 5x3, whatever rep scheme and start adding some weight slowly while still trying to maintain form and technique as much as possible.

Hey there is a good thread on this "start w/ machines" dogma/myth.

I think it's in a "Bill Starr Beginnger's Program" thread or some such. I remember that between myself and Dan we pretty much put it to rest but I can't find it.
