It's not a foregone conclusion that substrate utilization changes as a result of pre-feeing carbs before "cardio". In fact it was always an assumption. I.E. it must change something right?

There is some discussion of this at the end of the Pre and Post nutrition study (post number 18 ->). Just info to consider as the fasted cardio is sort of an "everybody knows" kinda thing. Which usually means nobody can ever point to one iota of actual scientific fact on it. That doesn't mean there isn't any of course.

Probably very practical reasons to forego carbs for someone cutting and I'm not arguing that. And I wouldn't take in carbs in shake form immediately prior to cardio. For the last whole food meal though I would (and do although I don't care about fat-loss).

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.

So what would be a good pre-cardio meal/shake?

OH, yeah, while you guys were posting I edited my post but I agree. I needed to read back as I didn't realize that this was all about carbs in shake form IMMEDIATELY prior. Some people swear that you need to do cardio FASTED. Or at least no carbs for the meal proceeding (one hour before or whatever) and I wouldn't recommend that. But I don't see too much point in taking in "shake carbs" right before.

The rest was just info to read.

I disagree with the cheating bit. You need to cheat every once in a while or you'll lose your mind and also you'll get your body used to being in a deficit.

I did a cut last winter/spring and I lost weight just fine by staying very strict during the weak and I'd usually cheat once on friday or saturday when I went out with my friends.
