Default crunches/situps

question for you experts...


been doing crunches, usually sets of 20 and anywhere from
5-9 sets total in a work out.
My lower back has sometimes felt very sore while doing the crunches...
I sit on a towel to keep my butt from getting sore on the tile, but
I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong...it's not a good kinda hurt.
It gets so sore during the set that I cannot continue and get my abs
burning like I like to. Any ideas here?
What am I doing wrong?

Crunches and situps are inherently evil because they put your lumbar into flexion, loaded flexion is not good for your back. This is why you're back is feeling so sore.

My advice is to stop immediately, you will only do more damage by continuing. Pick another exercise that does not involve flexion of the lumbar (lower back). There are plenty of them out there.

what would you suggest for abs?
I don't have any weights or a bench or anything...I'll do a write up
sometime on what my routine is, but I've been sticking my feet under the couch and doing crunches that way. It hasn't hurt my back till recently. I'd like to find something else that won't do any damage.

cable woodchops, planks, dragon flags, palloff press, do a quick google search just stay away from crunches and situps.

Just because your back is hurting now does not mean you haven't been accumulating damage all this time. You could have just reached a threshold and now its becoming a noticeable problem.

I like to do leg lifts while hanging from a pull-up bar when my lower back stiffins.
