in very simple terms....you wouldn't train for a marathon by doing a bunch of sparring would you? is what i think eric is getting at.

Right...like an extreme example is Lance Armstrong running the marathon. Of course he is going to do VERY well compared to most people. But it seemed to come as a shock to him and others that it was MUCH more difficult for him to finish than expected. And it HURT like hell...
It's an extreme example because he is such a GREAT athlete but that makes it a great example when you consider that bike riding is much more similar to long distance running than martial arts is to running.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.

Ok, now I understand. And I agree, running, makes you good at running, no doubt about it. endurance is specific, hitting the treadmill isn't going to allow me to punch for hours on end, or kick for that matter. I would have to train those specific things to bring my endurance up in those areas.
I guess at this point I'm just working with what I have available, and thats a weighted vest, various kettlebells, and a treadmill. But i will expand my endurance training as i go, and incorporate whatever is fitting at the time.

Well put Eric.
If you have a weighted vest and kettlebells you have enough to think of something that is "martial arts" related to workouts.
Anything involving jumping, lunges, sprawling and kicking and you will be cooked, and that's just lower body. Add some KB Bear crawls, Cleans or Snatches with a punch unload and core work and you are done, granted this is a very broad list, and either do them in a circuit, timed or not... Some of this I have in my journal. Your imagination is the limit, just think about the smaller goals at hand, i.e., what you want to work on like explosive movements, shoulder endurance, core strength, ect. and make workouts for the week.... oh and get a jump rope.

See a lot of that stuff I already have programed into my weight training days, and thats why I have 3 meso cycles set up for rotating those types of movements in, and to get the best of all worlds.
I need to have some kind of cardio as well. I think I'm going to take Thursday and work on getting up to 10 5min "rounds", and use friday for more creative/weighted cardio, which will then lead into a similar workout for depletion on saturday morning.

Yeah, I agree with Dave..you have the startings already.
And I agree with him on the crossfit thing. I just had a long rant about that actually. But let me say that you can bridge it together in effective ways if you manage the stressors in an organized and not "random" way like crossfit does. Crossfit is just dong whatever the hell whenever hell on different days, lol I think enough people have pointed out that if you try do everything you will be good at none of them.
It's not like you can't lift and do, for instance, sled dragging on the same day...well I don't want to get specific because that's Dave's job, lol. And I think he was already getting into it.

Unfortunately this is going to be another late day at the office, but I fully intend to read through the links dave sent.
Thanks so much everyone, I'm sure I'll have more questions, and we can discuss this further after I'm up to speed on crossfit.

I wouldn't recommend crossfit. There are some cool individual exercises you can choose but there is not real direction or organization to the philosophy. I didn't realize that Dave was recommending it..if he was..I'll have to disagree with him on that. For individual pieces of info..crossfit can be good..for the big picture it's a load of nonsense, imo.
I mean here you are trying to come up with a plan and once you spend a bunch of time looking into crossfit you'll find that it's "workout's of the day" (WOD) which are more or less frigging random. Random stimuli...random results.

I understand eric, I'm not a fan of randomly doing things without a clearly outlined purpose. But i will check them out, see what they are all about, and I'm sure I'll find something useful.
