I started the gym today and on squat i did 90=bar and deadlift i started at 90=bar and added 50 3 sets of 5. on bench i had a hard time with two 35+bar. started shaking. i used the machine press 140x5 three sets right before so i may have been spent. im just curious what other people started at.

Avoid the smith machine, yet if you insist on using it, do it after free weights. Going heavy in an unnatural movement pattern (a fixed range of motion) can increase injury, not to mention the stabilizers and supporting muscle groups are canceled, it's not a natural range of motion and works outside the bodys three dimensional plane; therefore, it doesn't relate to functional strength.

My first time in the gym I was much younger. My first time ever squatting were half squats at 185 pounds for 5 reps, 3 sets. Always start out light to get form down, then begin raising the intensity.

you're just getting use to it right now, keep up with the free weights so your stabalizer muscles get worked on and you will progress quickly. When i started bench i was doing 3x5 of bar+35's and was having a helluva time. i believe squat (once you get good form) you will progress even more quickly than bench
