Its better to have a little extra fat when building muscle, so definitely bulk up first then trim the fat later. Protein shakes are good and help, but the food is the main thing you should be concerned with. Eat lots of food and make sure your body has more calories that it needs.

well i´d rather recommend you to lose fat first and bulk then.
the reason is: as a natural athlethe you should keep your bodyfat all the time under control. so, if you bulk up now and then want to cut in say 6 months, you risk that you´ll lose a good amount of hard won muscle mass, simply because it is more easy for your body to take enery out of muscles than from fat. but if you cut down now and the build up muscles with as little fat as possible you will have made a better deal

Here's the beauty of being very new to training--you should be able to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. Your weight is not very high for your height, so I'm not sure you should go on any major diet, especially since you are still 17.

Here's what I would do:
1. be sure to get a gram of protein per lb of bodyweight.
2. cut back in the junk, like fast food and sodas
3. follow a sensible routine. I'd start off with a full body routine, 3x a week for a couple of months just to get started.

I agree with ALPHA XX

There is no reason to bulk up and put on weight when alot of it is fat.

It is not easy to cut and maintain the muscle you have worked so hard to get at the same time.

1. Get to a sport dietician. You will get sound scientific advice on the foods suitable for you and your metabolism and build.
2. Stick to the diet plan.
3. Follow a full body routine at least 3 times per week.
4. Enjoy the quick awesome growth you get in the first few weeks. Be motivated by it.

Happy training

Absolutley untrue. By no stretch it is easier for you body to take energy out of muscles.

Reading all this, I'm confused. The word 'cut' has a certain connotation. Fatloss and cutting is not the same thing.

If the OP's bodyfat percentage is too high then it might be sensible to to concentrate of fatloss until the bodyfat is brought down to a better muscle building level. But that would not entail cutting which is too drastic.

My preferred strategy in that case would be to work on building a strength base while the main goal is to lose some fat. Then, when the bodyfat is hovering around 10 to 12 percent (even a bit higher) intake and training can be slowly manipulated to concentrate on building muscle without putting on a lot of un-needed fat.

However, I personally do not see enough information to make that call. He doesn't sound like he has that much fat to me though, I agree with Kevsworld on that.

I don't think that Pirate was suggesting the guy put on a bunch of fat. I don't know but I'm pretty sure he meant to concentrate on building muscle. People use the term "bulking up" differently.

Frankly I am really tired of the terms bulking and cutting being thrown around but meaning different things ten times in ever conversation.

My own two cents because I don't want to just criticize what other people say but not lend my opinion:

To Jakk, I can only go by the information you've provided and the words you used. NO, I do not thing that you should 'get skinny' and then work on muscle. Being skinny will not help you build muscle and neither will being overweight.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.

Only the muscle burning thing, Alpha. It's not that really. It's when everybody is "agreeing" with each other but saying different things, you know? It's confusing to me so it's got to be confusing to the poster seeing that I have been involved in about a million threads and he is just starting out, lol.

On the fat burning thing, right now, as you are reading this your body is burning fat preferentially. One of the biggest myths, or at least gross overstatements, perpetuated today is that your body will just eat up and drop muscle if you look cross eyed at something.

Sure you will lose muscle and especially with crazy deficits but it's not so very drastic as people make out.

I agree, there's no reason why you cant do both together get your self a decent routine, cut back the junk food and make sure you get enough protein 1 - 1.5 gram per pound of bodyweight.

Dont be too strict your diet, your only 17.

All the best too you.
