Default Knee Sleeves?

Has anyone here ever used knee sleeves instead of knee wraps for leg training? I am starting to get some pain and a little weakness in one of my knees during heavy squats from an old boating accident (boats and hidden sand bars don't mix).

I don't think I am at the point where I need to fully wrap my knees but I wouldn't mind having a little additional support on the weaker knee. They also seem to be a lot more convenient, so if anyone has any experience on whether they are worth it I would love to get some feedback before I buy a pair.

FYI these are the type of knee sleeves I am talking about:

Why do knee sleeves work? How do they help your knee? Sorry for the newb question but I've just never really had problems with my knee so I haven't looked into it.

Do they support it more from side to side more? Keep it aligned?
