Default Leg volume question

what up. been getting back into the thick of things slowely but surely, but havent posted any of my workouts because i am still trying some things so my workouts arent exactly set in stone just yet.

first what is everybodies thoughts on squating and doing deads in the same day. mind you even though my squatting is shitty my deads are 10 times worst. if i were to do a 5x5 depending on the day i can do 315 maybe more but ill wait a litlte before i try it and i can do 10x10 at 245. my deads i have no idea. but they are horrible and i have not tried to actually see how high i can go so i cannot give a good estimate of what i can do. but i also get in a few sets of of cleaning wieght into a military press. i dont say jerk because i dont jerk it. i just pick up the wieght clean it and press. i go one day light with 135 and the next day heavier and it fluctuates between 185 and 205.

so i guess my question is this. how much work on my legs is to much. my benching is than my squat and without even doing to much work to it. im pretty sure i cant do 10x10 of 245 but i may be able to push 315 more times than i can squat it. an di know i can do 365 5x5 on the bench, but im not to sure with the squat.

i can military press more than i can deadlift. which sucks big time. now its not because my lack of wanting to do legs, but as everyone who might read this knows me the reactive arthritis thing took me back big time and even before that i really didnt have a gym for years.

so i know with whatever i do my bench and shoulders will always keep going up because of doing pushups and other things they can handle the volume and i always see progress when im in the gym consistantly.

im trying to get my tree trunks back and i want my back strength back.

so would it be to much to to deads and squats on the same day twice a week? also at least 3 days a week i will be cleaning and pressing. i like the full body workout it gives me. and i always do them at the end of my workouts. also i am have been running stairs everyday and i plan on doing so for a while. gives my legs a great burn and i feel like thta is ten times better than getting on a treadmill.

if you need more info from me just let me know

I dislike doing squats and deads the same day because it kills my lower back. It may not be a big deal if you start off light with both of them, but once you get up in wieghts, whatever movement you do second will suffer.

I would suggest starting off light, and doing decent volume to get used to it, either on the same day or not. Then as you increase adjust the volume down, and when you get to the point where your hindered for the second movment because of fatique, switch it up so they arent on the same day.

I hope that makes sense.

yeah it does. i remember doing them on the same day when i was like 18 but it was only once a week. i did squats first and deads second. i was thinking about maybe just alternating the days, but i didnt know if it would be bad or not because that woulld be like me training my legs every single day with running stairs on top of that.

Like Hardgain said, unless you're doing a reduced volume or a light squat it will affect your deadlifting that day.

Personally I would want to keep deads by themselves or at least as the first exercise followed by 'light' squats.

Unless you're specifically looking for muscular endurance, I wouldn't be doing a 10x10. You'd be better to cut the volume and increase the weight IMHO.

You've got A2G's (quads) plus the power clean motion (hams/glutes) plus deads (hams/glutes/etc). So I'd say that you've covered your bases for legs. You said it yourself that you can MP more than you deadlift, so everytime you do your MP's its like your doing deadlifts since you're cleaning the weight from the floor (or a low pin). So already you're deadlifting like 3-4 times a week.

I also wouldn't be doing squats and deads on the same day and twice a week. Think about how much effort you're really putting in to those exercises if you start off in a semi-fatigued state. Regardless of what you do the volume is going to accumulate throughout the week and that will impact your training, so set things up so you're prioritizing the lifts you feel are important or deserve the 'best effort'.

you can do deads and squats in the same workout...but not as deads and squats. i am speaking of variations. for example: Squats and RDLs. or Deads and Box Squats. therecan be many combinations.

^^^I agree...

As soon as you say both exercises suck (even though you are obviously smoking something if you think that ) then that should tell you what you need to do. If something sucks then you aren't going to bring it up to it's full potential while coupling it with another problem exercise.

But I think that most of your questions revolve around the reactive arthritis. Everything is about volume rather than strength and yet you are concerned with weight on the bar. I think a very clear statement of your goals and needs would help. But I will say that it seems like you are limited by a certain way of thinking about it. Even when bringing up "volume" you have other parameters you can tweak to increase things. I think you do all these things but you do them sepearately...you don't put them together.

All this impacts strength but only impacts absolute strength to a limited degree. If you can't actually work at strength training levels you will always be limited in terms of displaying your potential capability. But when it comes to volume, or strength endurance, density is related to that, time is related to that, workload, etc....

ok. well whne it comes to volume i have just always done alot of volume no matter what i did so i just got used to that, and i always seen results from it thats why i stuck to it. before i got ot this website whenever i was in the gym i never did a 5x5. and when i finally did it i didnt feel worn out when i was done so i didnt stick to it that long.

and i just want to get my strength back in my legs and back. thats the goal in general. i have a few other goals but people have answered those questions for me already so im good with those.

the reactive arthritis doesnt hurt me any more. it just knocked me back a WHOLE lot. it knocked me back so much i sort have just got stuck and didnt know what to do. i will also be honest and say that it is a mental thing to. i remember the vloume i could have done years ago and what i can do now and then i just feel lost on not knowing what to do to work my way up. so i can load the bar. i just havent done so because i actually didnt know where to place deads in my workout. because like i said i used to do squats and deads on the same day but that was due to a lot of work and with me always doing a lot of volume. the only things i cant really do is snatch and clean into the squat position. overhead squats or lifting into a split.(like jerking)

well i just typed a bunch of stuff but i see what you guys are saying. the best thing for me to do is just load the bar and lift. i just have a tendancy to overthink things and make stuff way harder than what it is. what i will do is squat one day then do deads the next. im gonna put a workout together and start a journal on monday.

THANKS FELLAS!!!

some of the best gains you will ever make you wont "feel". Muscle soreness, and how tired you are after a workout are not very good indicators of what you accomplished in the gym. I hear ya though, I used to go by how it felt also.
