If the squat rack is out of sight of a mirror, get a bar, and take it to a mirror. Practice squats w/ just the bar-while watching yourself. Make changes as necessary. Also, how have you worked your erector spinae? That may be part of the problem.
Something to definately watch for is to make sure your back is not rounding. I squatted like this for a long time. It gave me some extra depth but in the end its not helping you. Make sure you're keep a tight natural arch in your back all the way to the bottom. You should feel squats mainly in your quads and glutes but you will feel it in your back as well. For me it used to be that my quads never got tired first because my back would be so stressed/strained for rounding out and straightening again. It gave me alot of trouble with soreness and really hurt my deadlift progress as well.
Watch some videos and then go do some squats with just a bar in front of a mirror. Standing sideways to the mirror might help too so you can see your back profile better.

But keep in mind that you just are only going to be able to go SO LOW while keeping the back set. You go too deep you round out until you work in more range of motion. But keeping the back set is more important than going deeper.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.
I'm not one to go by the book on anything except as a guideline. Discernment is always key. That said, ripptoes gets adoment about not relying on a mirror. Because of one direction of sight and contorting your correct head position while trying to look sideways, or even straght ahead. Rock On! sorry--I'm listening to some good old music that by the way my kids and their friends rock to even now! kids are colledge and senior highschool! But great post. I don't see anybody I can as to crtique me at my gym and the mirrors are hard not to look at. I will be following suggestions.
Sorry 917, I just re-read your post and just the bar if it's not near 50% should probably be OK to check out in a mirror, straight or sideways. Of course this is my discernment not gospel!
Well I haven't read the book but I'm sure he's talking about using the mirror while squatting during actual work sets. That makes sense because your head won't be in the correct position. However, while learning the form you *have* to be able to get visual feedback from what you're doing or you'll never be able to learn it properly. Also this learning process is with very light weight or no weight at all. You see what you're doing is correct and then you learn what that feels like. Then once you've learned the action and how it feels to do it correctly, you start adding weight without a mirror.
No pissing matches here! Just trying to learn and participate. And I think my post before yours said the same thing just different way. By the way I have used your advice before and it worked. Thanks
