Need some serious advice (BF too high!)

Rather than worry about the fat caliper number converted to %body fat, just use the number and the one spot recommended by Accumeasure is fine. Heck, you could just take the suggestion of the old Special K cereal commercial and "pinch an inch". If the amount of fat you can grab in that area decreases, then you are losing body fat.

I believe you can track the Accumeasure mm measurements and changes to that value can be used in addition to weight measurements to calculate fat loss:

Fat Loss = [Caliper(after)/Caliper(before) - 1] X Weight(before)

I have never tried this myself but mathematically it should give a representative result.

^^ Not necessarily a good idea. It's better to do a seven site skinfold test. People lose fat in different areas at different rates. If you do the seven site test, then you'll get an accurate measurement. It's one of the best ways to keep track of it. It's not overly complicated or time consuming.

Yeah, I should have said that for a lot of people, one measurement is fine but not for all. The abdominal area above hip bone seems good for me.

I guess a good illustration of being careful about things that work for most people but not all is that my "normal" body temperature is 97.0+/-.5°F. Similarly 220-age is not a good measure for all for maximum heart rate.

I'll try 7 measurements for the next couple months while I am trying to lose fat and see what the results actually are.

Location of fat loss and the measurement of fat loss has soo many variables that more measurements mean better accuracy and precision.

Taking 1 measurement only can really skew your results.

In either case, I plan on being on a calorie deficit and good exercise program. I will post pics at the beginning of next month to see what my progress is like. 2 weeks in, and I'm feeling pretty good.

I think you could use that method to generally track wether or not your are losing fat but I wouldn't use one fold as an indication of exactly what % you're at.

So 2 days turned into 3 days and I 1) ate unhealthily (not by choice, just what they fed us) and 2) Ate WAAYYY under calories (approx 14-1500 cals a day).

I notice a loss in muscle mass. Kinda sucks. Maybe I'll get lucky and put it back on this week.

Who cares what your body fat % is? If you don't like what you see in the mirror, change it. Sure, it's nice to quantify things sometimes, but I think people get overly concerned with weight and body fay %'s and the like.

[I didn't mean to sound harsh or snippy. But the mirror is a better judge of your physique than a scale or calipers, IMHO.]

I agree with you. I just like to quantify things as another way of seeing progress (compounding the mirror method). The calipers may not be accurate, but as the readings get smaller, I get more and more motivated.

One month progress, not a huge difference, but I'm seeing some changes. My BF readings from the calipers have decreased (I know I know).
