Default not too sure...

I'm still pretty new to lifting and I'm starting to get a hang of all of it and understand what I need to do.
I'm only 16 and I'm still growing, I'm afraid to begin doing squats because I've heard that it can damage the growth plates in your knees.
So my question is, is it ok for me to squat or will I damage my knees? And if I do squat, should I max out?
