Default Post Workout Shake

I tend to go for a run after i have trained these days, but i don't do it in the gym directly after as i'm not a tredmill fan, i tend to stop at a field on the way home, so i don't run until about fifteen minutes until after i've stopped doing the weights. Am i best to have my post workout shake before i run or afterwards?
I'm just worried that if i have it before, i'm just running off what i have drank, and therefore its pointlesss. BUT the flipside is i wonder if i don't have it until after i run, is it too late for it to have maximum effect on my muscles, as i stopped the weights 40 minutes before taking it?

If you're doing the cardio for fatloss, then it might be better to wait. I guess the ideal thing would be to take a protein shake or BCAA shake in between. Then take the protein/carb shake after running. It's not going to make much difference in the long run.

I agree, get that protein shake w/ bcaas before and during your run to prevent muscle breakdown. This should not have an effect on your fat loss. Protein with carbs is a good option for after unless you work out late. Your carb intake should be directly affected by what you are going to be doing after you injest them. Carbs followed by sleep is great way to build up some fat.

As long as the carb intake is a reasonable amount, then it won't get stored as fat...it will get stored as muscle glycogen. That's the nice thing about using high GI carbs. They will do their thing very quickly. And it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what activity you'll be doing after. The carbs PWO are for recovery and to switch the body into growth mode.

yea you're right, lemme rephrase that. Stay away from low GI carbs before bed, theres nothing wrong with some oats in the shake.

You have an anabolic window of about 30 minutes after lifting. What I would do to minimize bloating from downing a shake right before running is to sip on some BCAA's while you are lifting so you don't have to drink so much whey postworkout and take in some protein pre-workout. It'll keep you from getting cramped while you are running. Like Ross said it won't make much difference if you take it right after workout. Your muscles repair while you are not awake. I just hate food sloshing in my stomach while doing cardio.
