Default Pulled Abdominal Muscle

Son-of-a-b*tch. This hurts. Amazing how much you use your abs.

I am not sure how severe. I will rest (although I have some honey-do chores that I better get done) and see how I feel on Monday. It even hurts to sneeze. Bummer since I was building up to do 3x12 Dragon Flags...with nearly good form.

About the only thing it seems I can now do is grip and forearm work . Walking is ok but no running.

That is one of the worst I've had. And it is still tender after a year. Take it E-Z.

I should have mentioned the purpose of my post but supermad got the idea. I was just looking for feedback or suggestions.

@supermad,

How long did you lay off working out? I think I will be able to do some light squats and bench press in a week. No deadlifts, rows and obviously no ab work for quite a while.

I was not planning on seeing a doctor unless I do not see improvements over next week or if I see bruising or bulging. If I do see a doctor, I want one that is not old school that tells me I am too old and should quit exercising for 6 months.

I laid off for a couple of weeks, then worked my way in slow with regards to enything that stressed it. I did see my dr. and got anti-inflamitories instead of ibuproferin, but that was because my job requires lifting upwards 150-200lbs at any time. So, did I ever really let off?

You should probably go to the doc and check for a hernia. I have bruised my ribs a couple times to the point where it hurts just to take deep breaths, sneeze, situp, etc... I still lifted though. It may be different in your case seeing as how its a muscle and may be herniated.

It's been about 9 days and I feel a lot better now. Almost no pain at all unless I try to do quick bending movements. If I wouldn't have improved as I have, I most definitely would have scheduled an appointment with a doctor.

Hurt like hell to wear anything but sweat pants the first few days. Had to wear bandage around abdomen at work for first few days and wore a sweater to hide the fact that I was not wearing a belt.

I lifted but early on it was exercises with virtually no ab involvement and then I later progressed to light seated press and some bicep/tricep as well as leg extensions and leg curls. I normally do not do isolation exercises but in this case I felt it was better than nothing.

I believe that the continued exercises helped the healing and I did it in a way as to not re-damage tissue. Today I will do squats and deadlift at 50% as long as there is NO sign of any pain.

Good to hear, but remember that squats use a lot of core muscles. It would be best to start with the bar and slowly work your way up.

On a side note, I see that you are from Highland, IN...I'm from Crown Point, IN (went to Merrillville schools) but the military has me in SC.

Yeah. I took it easy. Did 2x8x35lb/5x85lb/3x105lb/5x5x125lb ATG squat and 8x35lb/5x125lb deadlift. No pain whatsoever but the potential was greater for the deadlift so I took that very easy.

I feel stronger (extra rest?). If all goes well, I'll progress up to and try squat PR in 3 weeks.
