Default question

Hi,
I am 18 5'10" 210 pounds. I want to lose weight and gain some muscle, i know they are kind of opposites but bear w/ me.
I have whey protein powder and glutamine powder but everyone I ask is giving me different answers on how much to take and when. When should I take it and how much?
I was told only 1 teaspoon of glutamine a day, and people keep saying to make sure you take some whey protein before bed but will this hamper my efforts to lose weight?
my workout scheldule is
on chest/arm day I will do a short jog for cardio workout then a fairly hard chest/arm workout. I will start my workout at around 11 AM. then later that night I will do a hour long moderate bike ride.
On leg days I will do a 30 minute bike ride then work out legs, then later that night I will do an hour long moder bike ride.
I plan on working out chest/arms
monday,wensday,friday
legs
tuesday,thursday,sat
resting sunday but still doing a bike ride in the morning and one in the evening.
as part of my diet I eat mostly chicken and tuna fish and sometimes lean red meat.
TY

I guess, first lets decide what is most important to you, at this point in time. Getting the muscle or losing the fat. You could trim down first then gain. Or put on the muscle, then trim down.

Ok, so you will need to be in a slight calorie deficit to start burning fat. (Burn more calories than you consume) The math is something like 12-14x your bodyweight for calory intake. Your metabolism could affect this number, but this is a general number. Consume smaller, more frequent meals. You could do about 3 - 15 minute high intensity cardio workouts a week in addition to your weight training.

Once you trim down sufficiently, it's time to jack up the calories and put on some weight. I wouldn't necessarily worry about it being perfect, because you will be putting on more weight, and fat has a tendency to come with the muscle gains. So you can tweak the fat loss more at a later time.

I have never tried Glutamine. One of these guys here could help you more with that.

I suggest you lay off the supplements for now, you don't need them and they're probaly disturbing your fat loss efforts. Concentrate on strenght training and cardio opposed to hypertrophy for now if you want FAT loss.
Also try to incorperate some back exercises otherwise you'll find yourself having an over developed chest , drawing your shoulders forward and basically ruining any good posture that you have. And plus rhomboids and lats look cool.

Read the stickies they're a gold mine of info!

If you want to lose weight and gain muscle it's hard to do, but can be done (depending on how your conditions now).

Write down what you eat and when you eat it. That will help some of us find out what will work.(be honest about it)

I think when a person is trying to lose weight the supplements come into play alot more then when they are trying to gain weight (I could be wrong) When your cutting your diet is limited. Diary, red meat, nuts. These would be good to take while your trying to put on weight, but with most people if these are cut out they will notice it better. I'm not saying you can't eat red meat, but it's better if you stick to turkey, chicken, fish and eggs for your protein source.

That dosen't mean that you have to go out and spend a whole wack of $$ on supplements, but things like protein powder, creatine, fish oils, some put Waxy Maize on their list, these are very good to take. I regards to glutamine some say it dose nothing... check this discussion out.. http://www.bodybuilding.net/suppleme...read-5066.html

ok heres my diet
Breakfast: nothing
I work out at 11 Am -whenever I am done. on Monday wensday friday I workout my arms/chest. i was thinking of drinking a whey protein powder and water mix before my workout. after my workout i will drink a whey protein powder water drink. For Lunch I will either eat tunafish, or a tunafish sandwhich, or cooked chicken breast, or egg whites. Sometimes I will have a bowl of Special K ceral w/ 0% fat milk or a bowl of honey bunches of oats ceral w/ 0% milk.
I put raw onions, sprinkled black pepper, and sometimes yellow peppers in my tuna and egg beaters.

Tuesday, thursday, and saturday I work out my legs but not an intense workout SO if you recommend no protein mixes then its the same as monday wensday friday just w/out the protein water mix.
For dinner I try to eat early like between 6-7 PM I will eat chicken, fish, or turkey. I try never to eat carbs for dinner.

For snacks I try my best not to eat any but when I do its something healthy like a bannana or some more tuna fish.

I only drink water as my beverage.

I am being very honest about this i have lost 75 pounds in the past 7 weeks w/ hard work and low calorie intake.

I think it's amazing that you have lost 75lbs...congrates , but you will have to change the way you eat now.....Food is not bad, it's what you need. Especially if you want to lose more fat and gain muscle...It's not and eazy thing to do.

First you need to eat breakfast. "The most important meal of the day" I'm sure you have heard that before, well it's true.

Lets say you get 8hrs sleep. Now if you have eaten right before you went to bed and if that was a good protein / carb meal your body might make that last 6hr, so for 2hrs your body is starving, and that's if you ate right before bed, which I don't think you do.
Now if you don't eat untill 11:00am that's another 5hrs without food. Your body needs nutrients to live, so it will steel it from your muscles (where the most nutrients are) not the fat-where some people think. You can't starve your body and lose healthy weight. And if you want to gain muscle at the same time then you need to eat every 3hrs or so.
