Default New and have some?s

So i am 6'6" and 285 Lbs. big and a little chunky right now. What i ultimately want to know is should i cut before try to build lean muscle mass? or would it be good to have a good balance between cardio and weight training and just go with what i have now?

Thanks in advance.

Did i say build lean muscle mass, i meant bulk up of course.
Anybody in for helping, i'm working on the proper nutrition thing and working a 3 day split right now due to school. I'm training for the fire academy at school which they are going to train me more. I know the importance of cardio period, but just confused about the whole thing for some reason, i guess i should ask can i keep my fat and build muscle while cutting with a balance of cardio?

Any takers?

Being lean will help with your fire fighting training. Carrying around extra weight in all that gear is only going to make it more exhausting.

Do you know roughly what your bodyfat % is?

Around 30%
i have no problems at all running the 1.9 mile loop around my block. as long as i have good shoes, i got shin splits really bad last time i really ran the loop, my shoes were way too narrow and just played against me. Now i've got some decent shoes and just do in gym cardio.

Im waiting on school money to buy a good set of cross training shoes ( cross trainers are requested by the school)

30% is pretty high. I think you should be looking for half of that before you start bulking.

285lb * 30% = 85.5lb of fat

85.5/2 = 42.75

So I would say try and lose ~40lb first and then try to bulk up cleanly.
