Default Smith machine

I had a look around a couple of gyms yesterday, one was bascially a fitness room attached to a golf club, absolute crap. The other is a leisure centre with is new and pretty decent. However it appears they don't have a squat cage or whatever it is, instead the guy showing me round says they have a smith machine.

I don't want to leave myself short as I know the squat is the most important life I will have to do when I commence training. Will one of these do the business or am I best to check out some more gyms? Thing is this one is on my doorstep.

if i were you i would keep looking around
although you can do squats and many other exercises on smith machines, i and a lot of people i know really dis like them as it doesn't give you the free motion that a rack and barbell does. In saying that i do know people at gym who love the smith machine and swear by it, although either way id suggest you still have a look around, a gym with a squat rack shouldn't be too hard to find
good luck mate

If it were me i would continue to look, ive just changed gym because they only had one squat rack (and they were shut on xmas day). My new gym has 8 squat racks but the down side is i have to travel 3 miles..

Yeah the problem I have is I live in the sticks and therefore my journey could be upwards of 12 miles or so. Don't know if its better to cut my loses and go local, but then have no squat rack. The boys in there were doing their bench with free weights and the same bar can of course be used to deadlift

In that case there are a number of other exercises you can do to compensate for squats..

Yeah, lets leave this myth behind.

If you have to commute a thousand miles you'll probably never go. Focus on what you can do, not what you cant..but don't use a smith.

Plenty of things you can do to get hella string that are not back squatting.

I'd like to get like a hundred people who are really precious about the backsquat (my new word I just picked up) and ask them just how many other lifts they've every done? I used to be the same way untill I started branching out and found out there were so many cool ways (and fun) to get strong.

If you act sanctimonious I will just list out your logical fallacies until you get pissed off and spew blasphemous remarks.
