Cool StrongLift 5X5 Routine

I've been lifting for a few months now. Doing some compound exercises, but now I'm looking to focus strictly on compound exercises. I've heard highly of the SL 5x5.

But my issue is that I see so many people talking about it online, but nobody has posted a definitive routine for the SL5x5. I've looked for hours and found so many different variations I want to start with the original.

Any opinions on other beginner 5x5 routines would also be appreciated.

As long as you include the main exercises, you can customize it for your equipment available and goals. You don't have to start with the original to get results. Just design your own from the guidelines.

I did the basic SL5X5 routine but I really didn't feel like I got a good workout in. During my typical sessions I'm almost in tears, but yesterday I felt more strain from running than anything.

Do these workouts work the abdomen, tris, bis, calves, and shoulders as evenly?

It depends on how you set it up. Most pre-built programs work everything evenly but everybody is different in the gym. Some people respond to less work and some respond to more. That is why you should design your own. I never go by pre-built programs anymore.

Well that's part of me trying to experiment with different workouts. Before I did a mix of compound/isolation exercises with 4 sets of 10.

I wanted to try the 3 sets 5 reps, or something of that sort for mass and strength and since the SL5x5 had such good reviews I thought I would give it a try. But I really don't feel that great after the fact.

There are reasons some of these "pre-built" programs are so popular, Some of them work VERY well. Typically what happens in a lot of cases is the person doing the routine becomes impatient and doesn't see the progress they think they should, or in the time they think they should. So they start throwing in a bunch of isolation movements thinking that more must be better. In most cases this leads to further frustration which often times makes the person give up thinking that they can't acheive the body they want. Or overtraining and injury. You're right to stick with compound movements. If you are pushing yourself to failure you're getting a good workout in. Give it some time. It takes more than a few months.
